A perfectly fitted custom door starts with accurate measurements. Whether you’re replacing an old door or installing one in a new frame, getting the dimensions right is the most important step. A door that’s even a few millimeters off can cause installation problems, gaps, or costly returns.
Tools You’ll Need
1)Tape measure (a laser measure is even better)
2)Pencil and paper
3)A helper for measuring larger frames
Step 1: Measure the Width
Measure the inside edge to inside edge of the door frame, not the old door itself.
-Take measurements at the top, middle, and bottom.
-Record the smallest measurement — frames are rarely perfectly square.
Step 2: Measure the Height
Measure from the floor or threshold to the top inside edge of the frame.
-Take measurements on both the left and right sides.
-Record the smallest measurement again.
Step 3: Measure the Thickness
Open the door and measure the thickness of the door slab itself.
-Standard interior doors are usually 35mm to 45mm thick.
Step 4: Determine the Hinge Direction
Stand outside the door, facing it.
-Hinges on the left → Left-hand door
-Hinges on the right → Right-hand door
This is a critical specification for custom doors — getting it wrong means the door won’t fit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-Measuring the old door instead of the frame
-Forgetting to check if the frame is square
-Not accounting for flooring changes
-Guessing the hinge direction
💡 Pro Tip: When in doubt, always measure twice — or better yet, ask a professional to measure for you.
